Know the Basics
Founded in 1927, the University of Houston’s centennial celebration is right around the corner (including renovations)! During the school’s history, it started as a teacher’s college, then a private institution, and now it is one of the largest public universities in the country.
Primetime Emmy Winner Jim Parsons, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, and NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon all call UH their alma mater.
Since 1927, the cougar moniker has been used. But in 1947, members of Alpha Phi Omega purchased a cougar and, in a name-the-mascot contest, chose “Shasta.”
Shasta VII and his brother, Louie, call the Houston Zoo their home, and students can visit them for free! Shasta’s cheerleader partner, Sasha, was introduced in 1995.
The Cougar Paw is the university’s hand sign, shown all over campus. The first Shasta lost one of its toes on the trip to a game against rival University of Texas. UT students mocked Shasta by holding up the hand sign. The hand sign was used at UH before and meant “V for victory.” Now donned “The Cougar Paw,” a sense of pride is felt anytime the hand sign is raised at UH.
The University of Houston is full of traditions, and it’s best to get to know them before moving.
What the Cougar House Does Best
The University of Houston is home to the best entrepreneurship college in the country, according to the Princeton Review. The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical city in the world; the University of Houston, the College of Medicine, and the College of Pharmacy are all members.
The University of Houston is also ranked in the top 50 universities in the country for both best public value and social mobility. Men’s basketball is a staple at the University of Houston, and its team consistently ranks as one of the best in the country. They’ve been ranked number 1 in the NCAA tournament for three straight years and number one in the Big 12 Conference. UH also has an extremely decorated basketball history. In the 1980s, the team popularized the ‘slam dunk’ in college and the pros with Phi Slama Jama, Texas’s Tallest Fraternity.
