College Moving Tips: Cross-Country Move Without a Car

Moving to and from college is stressful is enough; finals, internships, summer plans, and packing your into life into boxes. Now imagine doing it without a car. Collegeboxes has outlined six of the best ways you can move to and from college without a car.

1. Use Public Transportation

Cross-country buses are an option if you don’t have furniture or many belongings to transport. Most buses allow you to bring two small bags, and you can pay extra if you need to bring more luggage. Note that longer trips might require transfers, meaning you will have to move from bus to bus. This can be inconvenient if you have a lot of bulky luggage.

2. Take a Flight

Similar to public transport, you can choose to fly. This can be expensive depending on how many items you are planning to move. You can pay extra to check bags on a plane, but these fees can add up, and there are limits to what you can take on a flight.

3. Rent a U-Haul Moving Truck

If you want a DIY approach to moving across the country, you can rent a U-Haul truck. Moving trucks can be rented at any U-Haul center and returned to another center, even in a different state. If you’re moving from a small dorm room, a 10’ truck should be the perfect size to fit all your belongings.

You can find a price quote for your specific move by visiting the U-Haul website. Truck rates factor in the projected amount of time it will take you to get from point A to point B and the number of miles you’ll travel. That said, keep in mind that there are other costs associated with moving too; you’ll be responsible for refilling the gas tank,

driving the distance, and any stay at a hotel if you’re traveling a long distance.

4. Rent a U-Box ® Container

Renting a U-Box container from U-Haul is another option for moving across the country. U-Box containers can be shipped across town, cross-country, or even around the globe. The process is simple too — U-Box containers are dropped off at your door, you load them with your belongings, and then the container is picked up and shipped to your desired location.

5. Rent a Car

Some rental car companies allow you to rent a car in one city and return it to another. This may not be an option for

you if you are under 21, and there is usually an extra fee if you are under 25. Keep in mind, you will have to pay for gas and any damage (scratches, dents, interior wear, etc.) done to the vehicle.
