Where is Cal Poly Humboldt?
Cal Poly Humboldt is in Arcata, California. The school is the northernmost campus of the 23-school California State University system. Arcata sits on Humboldt Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It’s a great place to enjoy the outdoors as it’s not far from Redwood National and State Parks. The Arcata Community Forest, Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, Mad River Beach Country Park and the Clam Beach County Park are all attractions that will make you fall in love with Arcata.
It is a six-hour drive to Arcata from San Francisco or Sacramento as you follow U.S. Highway 101 and it’s about two hours south of the Oregon state line. Students can also find flights from California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport, which is 10 minutes from campus. There are also Greyhound and Amtrack buses to Arcata, where you can use the Arcata & Mad River Transit System (A&MRTS) bus from the Arcata Transit Center to campus.
What is Cal Poly Humboldt Known for?
Only recently has Cal Poly Humboldt been known by its current name. It was originally established in 1913 as Humboldt State Normal College. It’s also been named Humboldt State College, California State University, Humboldt, and was recently until the change in 2022 as Humboldt State University. On January 26th of 2022, the school transitioned into being California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.
Cal Poly Humboldt became California’s third polytechnic and the first in Northern California. What is the school known for? Right now, it’s growth. According to the school, “California’s historic $458 million investment in our polytechnic vision and approval of our polytechnic designation from California State University, Cal Poly Humboldt will add a total 27 new academic and experiential programs by 2029, with 12 launching in 2023.”
The university is broken up into three primary colleges, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; the College of Natural Resources and Sciences; and the College of Professional Studies. While a large portion of students major in art and biology influenced degrees, the investment from the state of California will add many sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees.
Cal Poly Humboldt also takes advantage of the Arcata location. They offer majors like applied fire science & management, fisheries biology, forestry, geology, marine biology, oceanography, and wildlife.
